Dodge, Parry and Block — WoW Classic
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ruDodge, parry and block are the three avoidance mechanics of WoW Classic that a tank's survivability rests on. Together with defense skill they decide how often an enemy swing harms you at all. They are the foundation of the warrior tank and paladin role on the WowX5 x5 server, built on top of the primary stats.
Dodge and parry remove damage entirely, while block only reduces it. So dodge and parry are worth more than block, but a shield matters for the ability to block at all.
The three avoidance mechanics
Each mechanic works differently, and knowing the difference matters for building a tank:
- Dodge — you fully avoid the hit. Grows from agility and defense skill, works from any side.
- Parry — you deflect the hit with no damage, but only against attacks from the front. Side effect: the enemy next swing comes a little faster.
- Block — does not cancel the hit, it reduces its damage by the shield block value. Requires a shield in hand.
The combat table
All outcomes of a swing against you combine into a single combat table — one shared roll per attack. It includes miss, dodge, parry, block, normal and critical hit. The key idea: the more avoidance you have, the more it pushes dangerous outcomes off the table, first of all critical and crushing blows.
| Mechanic | Effect | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Dodge | Damage = 0 | Agility, defense |
| Parry | Damage = 0, front only | Defense, items |
| Block | Damage reduced | Shield, defense |
How to raise avoidance
Dodge comes from agility and defense skill, parry mostly from defense and special items, block from a shield with a high block value and the same defense. A tank must combine avoidance with a health pool from stamina and armor. Build a tank pre-raid set and study the combat mechanics to balance your stats. Create a tank on WowX5 x5 and become an unbreakable wall for your raid.
FAQ
How do dodge, parry and block differ
Dodge and parry fully remove the damage of a hit, but parry works only against attacks from the front and speeds up the enemy next swing. Block does not cancel a hit, it reduces its damage by the shield block value.
Where do dodge, parry and block come from
Dodge grows from agility and defense skill, parry mostly from defense and special items, and block requires a shield and is also raised by defense. All three are core tank values.
What is the combat table in WoW Classic
It is a single list of outcomes for a swing against you: miss, dodge, parry, block, normal or critical hit. All chances combine into one roll, so more avoidance pushes dangerous critical hits off the table.
