Crowd Control (CC) in WoW Classic
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ruCrowd control (CC) is the ability to take an enemy out of the fight: stun, sleep, turn into a sheep, root. Smart control lets a group fight enemies one at a time and survive fights that would otherwise be lethal. Let us break down the kinds of control in WoW Classic and their rules on the WowX5 x5 server.
The key rule of control: many effects break on damage. Polymorph, sleep and blind fall off on the very first hit — warn the group who not to touch.
Kinds of control
In Vanilla control falls into several families:
- Stun — the target cannot act at all: a rogue's Kidney Shot and Cheap Shot, a paladin's Hammer of Justice, the stun from a warrior's Charge. Subject to diminishing returns.
- Fear — the target flees in panic: a warlock's Fear, a priest's Psychic Scream, a warrior's Intimidating Shout. Can break from accumulated damage.
- Sleep / incapacitate — a mage's Polymorph (turns into a sheep and heals it), a rogue's Sap, a hunter's Freezing Trap. Breaks on any damage.
- Roots and immobilize — a druid's Entangling Roots, a mage's Frost Nova. The target stands still but can attack and cast; damage may break the roots.
- Disorient — a rogue's Blind: the target wanders and cannot act, breaks on damage.
What breaks on damage
The key Classic mechanic is control's resistance to damage:
| Control type | Reaction to damage |
|---|---|
| Polymorph, Sap, Blind | breaks on the first damage |
| Fear | chance to break from accumulated damage |
| Stun | holds for the full duration |
| Roots | can break on damage |
So you must not attack a polymorphed sheep — the first hit frees it at once (and polymorph also restores its health). In a dungeon you assign who is held in control and skip them in the kill order.
Target-type control
Some control only works on certain creatures:
- Polymorph — only beasts, humanoids and critters (not undead or mechanicals).
- A warlock's Banish — only demons and elementals.
- A priest's Shackle Undead — only undead.
- A druid's Hibernate — only beasts and dragonkin.
- A hunter's traps and Blind — most types, with their own quirks.
So the group's control lineup is picked for the dungeon's mob types: a priest is prized against undead, a warlock against demons.
Control in PvP and PvE
- In PvE control lets you carve up big packs: one in polymorph, another in a trap, the tank holds the rest.
- In PvP control decides the outcome but runs into diminishing returns — you cannot hold an enemy forever.
- Some control is removed by cleansing — see dispel mechanics.
Ties to other mechanics
The control mechanic is part of the larger effects and control section. The practice of dealing out control in a fight is covered by the crowd-control guide, and magical protection from it by magic resistance.
Control on WowX5 x5
On WowX5 x5 control works by Classic 1.12.1: the same break-on-damage rules, the same target-type limits and the same diminishing returns in PvP. Master control and you will pull hard packs and win duels through a well-built chain of effects.

FAQ
What kinds of crowd control exist in WoW Classic
The main kinds are stun, fear, sleep and incapacitate (polymorph, sap), roots and immobilize, and disorient (blind). There is also narrow, target-type control — banish for demons and shackle for undead.
Does polymorph break on damage
Yes. Polymorph and most incapacitate effects break on the first damage to the target, and polymorph also heals the transformed creature. So you must not attack a controlled target if you want to keep it held.
How is control different from diminishing returns
Control is the effects themselves (stun, fear, polymorph); diminishing returns is the rule by which repeated control of one kind lasts less each time. The control kinds are described here, diminishing returns on a separate page.
