Armor is the base survival parameter in WoW Classic. It reduces incoming physical damage but works on a non-linear formula with diminishing returns and a hard cap. Understanding this formula helps a tank build gear correctly on the WowX5 x5 server.

The mitigation formula

The reduction percentage is: armor / (armor + 400 + 85 × attacker level). Against a level 60 attacker the denominator equals armor plus 5500. The reduction cap is 75%: above it armor does nothing.

Diminishing returns and effective health

Each additional point of armor gives slightly less reduction, but is not useless: it raises so-called effective health. Effective HP = your health pool divided by the fraction of damage that gets through. So armor and stamina together multiply a tank's survivability.

What matters to a tank

Armor does not protect against magic — add resistance on magical bosses.
Armor pairs well with dodge, parry and block: avoidance removes damage entirely, armor cuts the rest.
Against crushing blows armor reduces their damage too.

Armor reduces only physical damage by the formula: armor divided by the sum of armor, four hundred and eighty-five times the attacker level. Against a level 60 attacker the denominator is armor plus five and a half thousand.

Is there a cap on armor mitigation

Yes, physical damage reduction from armor is capped at seventy-five percent. Beyond that cap extra armor does nothing, so tanks balance armor with stamina and avoidance.

Does armor protect against magic

No. Armor reduces only physical damage. Resistance to the relevant school works against magic schools, not armor, so armor value drops on magical bosses.
