Critical Strike (Crit) is a secondary stat of WoW Classic that grants a chance to deal boosted damage. Crit turns a steady damage stream into bursts, so both melee fighters and casters value it. Like other derived values, crit grows out of the primary stats on the WowX5 x5 server.
Remember the difference: weapon crit = x2 damage, spell crit = x1.5. That is why one percent of crit is more exciting in melee than in magic.
The critical strike multiplier
In WoW Classic the multiplier depends on attack type. Weapon swings and shots on crit deal double damage. Spells on crit deal one and a half times damage, that is plus fifty percent. Talents can add more: a mage Ignite and a warrior Deep Wounds add damage on top of a crit.
- Melee and ranged: x2 damage.
- Spells: x1.5 damage.
- Periodic damage (poisons, curses) cannot crit in Vanilla.
Where to get crit
The source of crit depends on your role. Rogues and hunters get crit from agility, mages and warlocks from intellect. Then come items, talents and buffs.

A key nuance of Vanilla raids: against a target above your level your crit chance drops. Bosses are level sixty three, that is plus three levels over a level sixty character, and part of your crit is eaten away. So your real crit on a boss is lower than the figure on your character sheet. Account for this when building your pre-raid set and study the combat mechanics to balance crit, attack power and hit.
