Armor Kits — Leatherworking Reference for Patch 1.12.1
Armor kits are leatherworking consumables that permanently add armor or defense to a piece of gear. In WoW Classic 1.12.1 on the WoW x5 server they are the most accessible way to buff your chest, legs, gloves and boots before you have a good enchant for them, and the Core Armor Kit remains a niche tank choice even in raids.

◆What armor kits do and where they go
Every kit is an item with a Use effect. Click it and pick an item in your bags or on your character. According to our server database all six kits share the same restriction: they fit chest (including robes), legs, hands and feet, made of any material — cloth, leather, mail or plate. Cloaks, bracers, head, shoulders and weapons are not allowed.
The first five kits give a flat armor bonus: +8, +16, +24, +32 and +40. The Core Armor Kit works differently and grants +3 Defense, which helps a raid tank against critical strikes. Higher kits cannot go on very low-level gear: the Heavy Armor Kit needs item level 15 or higher, the Thick kit 25 or higher and the Rugged kit 35 or higher.
◆All armor kits in 1.12.1
| Kit | Skill | Bonus | Reagents | Recipe source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light Armor Kit | 1 | +8 Armor | 1 Light Leather | starter profession recipe |
| Medium Armor Kit | 100 | +16 Armor | 4 Medium Leather, 1 Coarse Thread | expert trainers, 6s 50c |
| Heavy Armor Kit | 150 | +24 Armor | 5 Heavy Leather, 1 Fine Thread | Una (Thunder Bluff), Telonis (Darnassus), 20s |
| Thick Armor Kit | 200 | +32 Armor | 5 Thick Leather, 1 Silken Thread | Una, Telonis, 35s |
| Rugged Armor Kit | 250 | +40 Armor | 5 Rugged Leather | master leatherworkers, 43s |
| Core Armor Kit | 300 | +3 Defense | 3 Core Leather, 2 Rune Thread | pattern from Molten Core |
Per our server data the Medium Armor Kit is taught by expert trainers in capitals and larger hubs, for example Fimble Finespindle in Ironforge, Simon Tanner and Karolek. The Rugged Armor Kit is taught by Drakk Stonehand in Aerie Peak (The Hinterlands) and Hahrana Ironhide in Camp Mojache (Feralas). The full list of patterns lives in leatherworking patterns.

◆Core Armor Kit: pattern and leather
Pattern: Core Armor Kit is epic, binds when picked up and requires Leatherworking 300. In our server database it sits in a shared recipe table that drops with roughly a 14% chance from seven bosses of Molten Core: Lucifron, Magmadar, Gehennas, Garr, Shazzrah, Baron Geddon and Golemagg. Core Leather is skinned from Ancient Core Hounds and from Magmadar himself, so the raid needs at least one skinner.

How to craft and apply armor kits
- Learn Leatherworking and level it to the required threshold — the route is in the leatherworking guide.
- Learn the recipe from a trainer or from the pattern.
- Gather leather and thread: thread is sold by trade supplies vendors, leather comes from skinning and the auction house.
- Craft the kits in your profession window — no special tools are required.
- Use the kit and click your chest, legs, gloves or boots. To apply it to another player's item, place it in the bottom slot of the trade window.
◆Armor kit or enchantment
Armor kits are a permanent enhancement, not a separate socket: in 1.12.1 they use the same slot as enchantments. Apply a kit and the old enchant is gone; enchant the item and the kit disappears. That is why by level 60 gloves, boots and chest usually get enchants from chest enchants, glove enchants and boot enchants, while kits stay for leveling and temporary gear.
Legs are the exception. Enchanters have no leg enchants in 1.12.1: pants are only improved by arcanums from librams of Dire Maul and Zul'Gurub enchants. Until you have one, a Rugged or Core Armor Kit on your pants is normal.
Use cases: leveling, raids, PvP
- Leveling. +24 to +40 Armor on four slots is a noticeable boost for levels 20–50 for the price of a few pieces of leather.
- Raids. Tanks value defense more than armor, so the Core kit goes on legs or on an item with no good enchant available. More on this in tanking basics.
- PvP. +40 Armor on pants is a budget option for a melee fighter who has not yet got a better enhancement.
- Reputation and tickets. Chronos at the Darkmoon Faire takes 8 Rugged Armor Kits for 20 Prize Tickets (see Darkmoon Faire tickets); Cenarion Circle logistics tasks ask for the same 8 kits, and the Craftsman's Writ for Rugged Armor Kits is turned in for Argent Dawn reputation.
The Rugged Armor Kit is one of the cheapest leatherworking skill-ups past 250: it needs only Rugged Leather, with no thread or rare reagents.

FAQ
?Can I apply an armor kit on top of an enchantment?
No. In 1.12.1 armor kits are permanent enhancements that use the same slot as enchantments. A new kit wipes the old enchant, and a new enchant wipes the kit.
?Which items accept armor kits?
Only chest, legs, hands and feet armor made of cloth, leather, mail or plate. Cloaks, bracers, helmets, shoulders and shields cannot take an armor kit.
?Where do I get Pattern: Core Armor Kit?
It drops from Molten Core bosses (Lucifron, Magmadar, Gehennas, Garr, Shazzrah, Baron Geddon, Golemagg). You need Leatherworking 300 to learn it.
?Why do leatherworkers craft Rugged Armor Kits in bulk?
They are a cheap skill-up past 250 and a common turn-in: Chronos at the Darkmoon Faire takes 8 Rugged Armor Kits for 20 Prize Tickets, and Cenarion Circle logistics tasks ask for the same 8 kits.
