Defense is a key secondary stat of WoW Classic for tanks. Defense skill decides how hard it is for an enemy to hit you, crit you or land a special ability. It is the survivability foundation of the warrior tank and paladin on the WowX5 x5 server, built on top of the primary stats.
Base defense skill equals five times your level — three hundred at level sixty. Every point beyond that makes you a little harder to harm.
What defense skill does
Defense works against the enemy weapon skill. The higher your defense relative to the attacker's skill, the stronger the effect across several fronts at once:
- Lowers the enemy chance to hit you with a normal swing.
- Lowers the enemy crit chance against you.
- Lowers special ability and crushing blow chance.
- Raises your dodge, parry and block.
That is why defense is the universal defensive stat: one attribute improves your entire dodge, parry and block package.
Crit immunity
The main goal of a raid tank is to become uncrittable. Level sixty three bosses crit more often, and a crit on the tank is double damage and a common cause of deaths. Each point of defense above the boss weapon skill trims its crit chance a little. With enough defense the tank drives boss crits to zero and takes a predictable, steady stream of damage that healers can manage.

How to gain defense
Defense comes from items with a direct defense skill line, enchants on chest and shield, and stamina pairs with it for a bigger health pool. Build a tank pre-raid set and study the combat mechanics to understand the attack table. Create a tank on WowX5 x5 and hold the line in dungeons and raids.
