'Display driver stopped responding' in WoW: fix GPU crashes

Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ru

Symptoms: the image freezes, the screen flashes black, 'Display driver stopped responding and has recovered' pops up, then WoW crashes. Even Vanilla's old engine triggers this — driver, heat or settings are to blame.

Step 1: clean driver reinstall

Remove the video driver with the vendor's tool (or via Programs and Features) and install a fresh version from NVIDIA / AMD / Intel. Don't update "over the top" — do a clean install. This fixes most TDR errors.

Step 2: cap the frame rate

The DirectX 9 engine with no FPS limit spins the GPU pointlessly. Enable Vertical Sync in WoW graphics settings or set a frame cap in the driver panel (60–120). Heat and crashes drop sharply. See optimal graphics settings.

Step 3: check for overheating

  • Install a temperature monitor (GPU-Z, HWMonitor).
  • Above 85 °C under load the card throttles and resets the driver.
  • Blow dust out of the heatsink and fans, check fan speeds.

Step 4: remove overclock

Factory or manual GPU overclocks are often unstable specifically in old games. Reset clocks to stock (Reset in MSI Afterburner) and test.

Step 5: DirectX and compatibility

  • Reinstall the DirectX 9.0c redistributable — Vanilla uses exactly that.
  • Run windowed: Wow.exe -windowed — a driver crash then rarely takes down the whole system.
  • If nothing helps, see error #132 — it's often video-memory related.

FAQ

What does 'display driver stopped responding and has recovered' mean?

Windows reset a hung video driver (a TDR error). Causes: an outdated or corrupt driver, GPU overheating, unstable overclock or too-heavy settings. Start with a clean driver reinstall.

Why does WoW Vanilla stress the GPU if the game is old?

The old DirectX 9 engine with no frame cap can push hundreds of FPS in menus and simple scenes, heating the card. Enable vertical sync or cap FPS to reduce load and heat.

Does rolling back the driver help?

Yes, if crashes started after a driver update. New drivers sometimes handle old DirectX 9 poorly. Try the previous stable version, or conversely the very latest.
