Quel'Serrar Quest: Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Obtaining the Unfired Ancient Blade
The quest starts with finding the Unfired Ancient Blade. It drops in the Sunken Temple from naga and dragonkin as a rare drop. It's not guaranteed — sometimes multiple clears are needed.
On the x5 server clear speed is higher, so organizing several Sunken Temple runs with your guild speeds up the process.
Step 2: Foror's Compendium of Dragon Slaying
With the blade in hand, find Foror's Compendium of Dragon Slaying — a book hidden in a chest inside Dire Maul (West wing). It spawns as a rare chest — it may not be there every run.
Alternative: The book sometimes appears on the auction house from other players.
Step 3: The "Foror's Compendium" Quest
The book triggers the quest "Foror's Compendium". You're directed to Librarian Mae'ryn (Quel'Thalas lore figure with knowledge of the blade).
For warriors/paladins: bring the book, combine it with the Unfired Ancient Blade to receive the Completed Ancient Blade.
Step 4: Tempering in Molten Core
The key step: throw the Completed Ancient Blade at Ragnaros's feet the moment he dies, while lava is still active — the blade will be tempered by the Firelord's power.
Mechanics: 1. Kill Ragnaros (final boss of MC). 2. At the moment of his death throw the Completed Ancient Blade on the floor in front of the body. 3. The blade will be surrounded by lava and transform into Quel'Serrar.
If you miss the throw or are too slow — you'll have to wait for the next MC clear. Coordinate with your raid in advance.
Tempering: Detailed Mechanics
When Ragnaros dies he falls into the lava and the chamber heats up. You have about 15 seconds to throw the blade. Correct position: slightly behind the boss's fall location. The blade must rest on the floor (not in the lava) or it will be consumed without transforming.
Prepare a macro: /use Completed Ancient Blade — activate it immediately after the kill-credit appears.
Tips for the x5 Server
- MC clears on WowX5 go faster — more opportunities to practice the timing.
- Find an experienced loot master who can explain the throw rules to the entire raid.
- No guild for MC? Look for PUG raids in world chat.

Warrior Tank: Quel'Serrar is the best avoidance/block sword until Thunderfury. Especially valuable in the early weeks of raiding.
Paladin Tank: One of the few good one-handers for paladins. Helps maintain threat in 5-man dungeons and offtanking in raids.
