Quel'Serrar Quest: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Foror's Compendium of Dragon Slaying

The quest starts with the book Foror's Compendium of Dragon Slaying (renamed Nostro's Compendium in today's client). It is a very rare drop from Dire Maul bosses — a fraction of a percent per boss. The book is not Bind on Pickup, so it can be bought on the auction house, but only a level 60 warrior or paladin can start the quest.

Step 2: Lorekeeper Lydros

Bring the book to Lorekeeper Lydros, a Shen'dralar elf in the library of Dire Maul West (also reachable through the North wing). He accepts the quest Foror's Compendium and hands you [A Dull and Flat Elven Blade], which starts The Forging of Quel'Serrar. Give the blade back to Lydros — he provides the Unfired Ancient Blade and the second part of The Forging of Quel'Serrar.

Step 3: Tempering in Onyxia's flame

The key step happens in Onyxia's Lair, not in Molten Core:

1. During the fight, use the Unfired Ancient Blade — it is planted in the ground. Place it where Onyxia's fiery breath will hit it.
2. The blade becomes a Heated Ancient Blade — pick it up. It has a 20-minute timer, so it is best to plant the blade late in the fight (around 5–10% of Onyxia's health).
3. Kill Onyxia and use the heated blade on her corpse to get the Treated Ancient Blade. Warn the raid that nobody may skin the body before that — once skinned, the corpse disappears.
4. Return to Lorekeeper Lydros and turn in the quest to receive Quel'Serrar.

Tips for the x5 Server

• Look for the book on every Dire Maul clear and watch the auction house — it is the rarest part of the quest.
• Before the Onyxia raid, agree with the raid leader and skinners on what happens at the corpse.
• Don't forget your Onyxia attunement — without it you cannot enter the lair.

Warrior Tank: Quel'Serrar is one of the best tanking swords of the Molten Core and Blackwing Lair era: the defense and armor proc reduces incoming damage, and +12 Stamina adds health.

Paladin Tank: One of the few good one-handers for paladins. Helps absorb hits in 5-man dungeons and when offtanking in raids.

What happens if the tempering fails? If the breath missed the blade, the 20-minute heated-blade timer ran out or Onyxia's corpse was skinned — abandon the quest, destroy the blade and pick up a new Unfired Ancient Blade from Lorekeeper Lydros. You do not have to find the book again.
