Pre-raid gear is the set of blue items you collect before your first raid. You need it to survive Molten Core boss damage and put out enough of your own. This guide covers where to get items for each slot.
Why you need pre-raid gear
Walking into Molten Core in leveling gear is a bad idea: not enough health, armor or damage. The goal of the pre-raid phase is to replace greens with blues from level-60 dungeons, crafting and reputation rewards. For exact BiS items for your class, check the BiS lists.
Gear sources
Level-60 dungeons
The main source of blue items. Priority instances:
- Stratholme — weapons, rings, trinkets, Tier 0.5 quests.
- Blackrock Depths — armor, weapons, arena access.
- Upper Blackrock Spire — bracers, heads, BWL attunement.
- Sunken Temple — rings and wands for casters.
- Maraudon — level 45–52 items to finish off slots.

Crafting
Professions cover problem slots:
- Blacksmithing: plate and mail sets (e.g. Lionheart, Dark Iron).
- Leatherworking: sets for druids, shamans, rogues, hunters.
- Tailoring: cloth sets for mages, warlocks, priests.
- Engineering: goggles, grenades, boosters — important in raids.
Reputations
Some factions give blue rewards at 60:
- Argent Dawn — rings, cloaks, shoulders (Plaguelands).
- Cenarion Circle — AQ-oriented rewards.
- Timbermaw Hold — enchanted shoulders.

How to know you're ready
Rule of thumb: you've replaced most greens with blues, tank health is ~4500+, DPS damage is steady on a dummy. Don't forget consumables and raid preparation.

On an x5 server — usually a few days of active play. Boosted rates and drops shorten dungeon farming compared to classic 1x.
Can I enter Molten Core without a full pre-raid set?
Tanks and healers should have a full set; DPS can enter partially geared. But the better the group's starting gear, the easier the first bosses.
Which dungeons give the best pre-raid gear?
Stratholme, Blackrock Depths and Upper Blackrock Spire are the main sources of level-60 blues.
Is crafting gear worth it before raiding?
Yes. Crafting covers problem slots that rarely drop in dungeons and is often on par with blue loot.
