Warlock Curses: Elements, Shadow, Recklessness and Doom

Section: Classes & races 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 04.10.2026

Warlock curses are the main raid contribution of the class besides damage. Curse of the Elements empowers mages, Curse of Shadow boosts other warlocks and Shadow priests, and Curse of Recklessness strips armor for warriors and rogues. This guide for the WoW x5 server covers every curse in patch 1.12.1, its effects and how to assign curses in a raid.

The Main Rule: One Curse per Target

Every curse in 1.12.1 says «Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target». If you cast Agony and then Elements, Agony disappears. Curses from different warlocks coexist, so in a raid every warlock gets their own curse. More about the class in the warlock guide.

Damage Curses

Curse of Agony

Rank 6 (level 58) deals 1044 Shadow damage over 24 seconds. The damage is dealt slowly at first and builds up toward the end, so reapplying Agony early is a loss. It is the main curse while leveling and in solo content.

Curse of Doom

Learned at level 60. After 1 minute it deals 3200 Shadow damage, with a 1 minute cooldown. It cannot be cast on players. If the target dies from this damage, there is a chance a Doomguard is summoned. Use it in long fights when the raid does not need your curse.

Raid Amplifier Curses

Curse of the Elements

At level 60, for 5 minutes, it reduces the target's Fire and Frost resistances by 75 and increases Fire and Frost damage taken by 10%. This is the answer to «curse of elements classic»: without it, mages lose a sizable part of their damage.

Curse of Shadow

Rank 2 (level 56) reduces Shadow and Arcane resistances by 75 and increases Shadow and Arcane damage taken by 10% for 5 minutes. It is needed for Shadow Bolt warlocks and Shadow priests.

Curse of Recklessness

Rank 4 (level 56) reduces the target's armor by 640 for 2 minutes, but increases its melee attack power by 90. A cursed target will not flee and ignores Fear and Horror effects. Valuable for groups with warriors and rogues.

Control Curses

  • Curse of Tongues — Rank 2 (level 50) slows the casting time of all the target's spells by 60% for 30 seconds. Essential against casters in PvP and on some bosses.
  • Curse of Weakness — reduces damage caused by the target for 2 minutes; Rank 6 (level 52) by 31.
  • Curse of Exhaustion — an Affliction talent that slows the target's movement for 12 seconds. The main kiting tool in warlock PvP.
  • Amplify Curse — a talent: for 30 seconds it increases the effect of your next Curse of Weakness or Curse of Agony by 50%, or your next Curse of Exhaustion by 20%. 3 minute cooldown.

Curse Assignment in a Raid

Vanilla raids have a debuff limit on each target, explained in detail in the debuff limit article. Because of it, the raid leader assigns curses in advance:

  1. Elements — one warlock, if the raid has many mages or fire warlocks.
  2. Shadow — a second warlock; for a Shadow Bolt raid setup this is the most valuable curse.
  3. Recklessness — a third warlock, if the boss needs its armor reduced and does not flee at low health.
  4. Everyone else — no curse, or Agony and Doom only if there are free debuff slots.

Remember to refresh curses every 5 minutes and tell the raid chat if your curse was removed. For long fights, keep a stock of soul shards and the right demon from the warlock pets guide.

Совет

Make a separate macro for each curse and pin them to your action bar: it makes reapplying the right one after a target dies much easier.

FAQ

Can I put two curses on one target?

One warlock can keep only one of their curses on a target. A new curse replaces the previous one. Curses from different warlocks can coexist on the same target.

What does Curse of the Elements do in Classic?

At level 60 it reduces the target's Fire and Frost resistances by 75 and increases Fire and Frost damage taken by 10% for 5 minutes. It is the key raid curse for mages and fire warlocks.

Can Curse of Doom be used on players?

No. Curse of Doom deals 3200 Shadow damage after 1 minute, has a 1 minute cooldown and cannot be cast on players.

How many warlocks are needed for raid curses?

Usually three: one keeps Curse of the Elements, another Curse of Shadow, the third Curse of Recklessness. The rest deal damage without a curse or use Agony if the debuff limit allows.
