Shaman and Paladin are the two iconic hybrids of WoW Classic 1.12.1 and the game's great faction mirror. Shaman is Horde-only, Paladin is Alliance-only, so choosing between them usually means choosing a side. Both heal, both empower the group and both can melee, but they do it in very different ways. Class breakdown

Shaman — the king of Horde group buffs. The Windfury Totem sharply raises the melee group's damage, mana and healing totems keep the raid going, and Grounding and Tremor totems save the day in PvP and boss fights. In raids the shaman is one of the best healers thanks to Chain Heal, which bounces between wounded targets. As enhancement he dual-wields and hits hard with Windfury procs. The downside: totems are stationary with limited range, and without them the shaman is noticeably weaker.

Paladin — the Alliance backbone of blessings and auras. Blessing of Kings, Might and Salvation empower the whole raid, auras passively buff the party, and Hand of Protection, Freedom and Sacrifice pull allies out of trouble. The paladin is a solid single-target healer and nearly unkillable in PvP thanks to Divine Shield (the bubble) and Lay on Hands. The downside: weak personal damage and no real tank or DPS role in a vanilla raid - the paladin is valued above all as a buffer and healer.

Verdict: which to pick

Play Horde - pick the shaman: Windfury, Chain Heal and totems make it indispensable in raids and dangerous in PvP. Play Alliance - pick the paladin: blessings, auras, the bubble and Lay on Hands give the best support and survivability in the game. There is no direct PvE duel between them - they are opposite-faction classes, and your side of the war usually decides the choice.

Tips on the x5 server

On x5 hybrids level fast: both shaman and paladin solo easily thanks to self-healing and armor.
The shaman must keep Windfury and mana totems up in raids - you fuel the team's damage and mana.
The paladin is prized for buffs on the server: keep current Blessings on the whole party.
Both classes are great for beginners: high survivability forgives mistakes.
Decide your faction in advance - you cannot switch sides without a new character.
