Shaman Shocks: Earth, Flame and Frost Shock in 1.12.1
Shaman shocks are three instant spells that share one cooldown and form the core of both the Elemental rotation and the shaman's group interrupt toolkit. In this guide for the WoW x5 server we cover Earth Shock, Flame Shock and Frost Shock as they work in Vanilla 1.12.1: when to learn them, how much damage they deal and which shock to press in dungeons, battlegrounds and while leveling.
Contents
◆General Shock Rules
All three shocks are instant, have a 20 yard range and use a shared 6 second cooldown. That means a shaman picks one shock per window rather than chaining them back to back. This is why it matters to understand each spell's role instead of simply adding them to your shaman rotation one after another.
Shocks are improved by three Elemental talents:
- Convection reduces the mana cost of shocks, Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning by up to 10% at max rank.
- Concussion increases the damage of shocks, Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning by up to 5%.
- Reverberation reduces the shock cooldown by up to 1 second, down to 5 seconds.
See the elemental shaman build for a full talent breakdown.
◆Earth Shock
Earth Shock is learned at level 4 and has 7 ranks. It deals Nature damage, interrupts spellcasting and locks the whole school of the interrupted spell for 2 seconds. Earth Shock also causes a high amount of threat, which helps you hold mobs while leveling.
Put Earth Shock rank 1 on its own button. The interrupt works the same on every rank, yet rank 1 costs 30 mana instead of 450 for rank 7. Ready-made rank macros are listed in shaman macros.
Interrupt mechanics and spell school lockouts are explained in detail in the article on interrupts.
◆Flame Shock
Flame Shock becomes available at level 10. It deals instant Fire damage and applies a magic effect that keeps burning the target for 12 seconds. Flame Shock pays off against targets that live longer than a few seconds: elite mobs, bosses and players in a drawn-out fight. In patch 1.12 the top rank at level 60 is not taught by a trainer but learned from a separate tablet (Tablet of Flame Shock VI).
◆Frost Shock
Frost Shock unlocks at level 20 and has 4 ranks. Besides Frost damage it slows the target by 50% for 8 seconds. It is the shaman's main tool against fleeing mobs and players. Creatures immune to snares still take the damage but are not slowed, and in PvP the slow follows the rules of diminishing returns.
Shock Damage by Rank
The table lists the first and last ranks based on 1.12.1 in-game tooltips, without spell power or talent bonuses.
| Shock | Learned | First rank | Last rank | Mana (first / last) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Earth Shock | Level 4 | 19–22 Nature damage | 517–545 (rank 7, level 60) | 30 / 450 |
| Flame Shock | Level 10 | 25 instant + 28 over 12 sec | 292 instant + 320 over 12 sec (rank 6, level 60) | 55 / 410 |
| Frost Shock | Level 20 | 95–101 Frost damage | 492–520 (rank 4, level 58) | 115 / 430 |
◆Using Shocks
PvE and Dungeons
In a group the shaman's key job is to stop dangerous casts with a low-rank Earth Shock. An Elemental shaman in raids spends mana mostly on Lightning Bolt and saves shocks for interrupts and moving targets. An Enhancement shaman should remember Stormstrike: it increases the next two sources of Nature damage by 20%, so an Earth Shock right after it hits especially hard. Learn more in the enhancement shaman build.
PvP
On the battlefield Earth Shock interrupts enemy heals and crowd control, while Frost Shock keeps warriors and rogues from escaping. Flame Shock helps against targets trying to slip into stealth. Combos and tactics are covered in the shaman PvP guide.
Leveling
At low levels Earth Shock is the best way to finish off a mob that starts fleeing or to interrupt a caster mob. After level 20 fleeing enemies are more reliably stopped with Frost Shock. A level-by-level plan is available in the shaman leveling guide.

FAQ
?Do shaman shocks share a cooldown?
Yes. Earth Shock, Flame Shock and Frost Shock share a single 6 second cooldown, so after casting one shock you cannot immediately cast another. The Reverberation talent reduces this cooldown to 5 seconds.
?Why keep Earth Shock rank 1 on your action bar?
The interrupt effect is identical on every rank, but rank 1 costs only 30 mana compared to 450 for rank 7. A separate low-rank button lets you interrupt cheaply and spend mana on damage only when it matters.
?At what level do shamans learn the shocks?
Earth Shock is learned at level 4, Flame Shock at level 10 and Frost Shock at level 20. The final rank of Frost Shock becomes available at level 58 and the final rank of Earth Shock at level 60.
?Which shock is best in PvP?
Earth Shock interrupts healers and casters, while Frost Shock slows a fleeing enemy by 50% for 8 seconds. Remember that the Frost Shock slow is subject to diminishing returns, and Flame Shock is useful against rogues and druids because its damage over time helps keep them visible.
