Role and combat rotation
The Shaman is a hybrid with unique totems: it drops up to four elemental totems (earth, fire, water, air) that buff the party, heal, control or deal damage. In Enhancement it melees with Windfury, in Elemental it casts Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning, and in Restoration it heals with Healing Wave and Chain Heal. Earth and Frost Shocks provide interrupt and kite.

How do Shaman totems work?
A totem is a temporary stationary 'pole' of one of four elements that gives an effect in a radius: buff, heal, damage or control. You can keep one totem of each element at once; they last until they time out or you move away.
Is the Shaman a healer or a DPS?
Both: the Restoration tree makes a strong healer with Chain Heal, the Elemental tree is ranged DPS with lightning, and the Enhancement tree is melee DPS with Windfury. The class is Horde-only in Vanilla.
Why is Earth Shock useful?
Beyond instant damage it interrupts an enemy spell and locks that magic school for a few seconds. This makes the Shaman a great counter-pick against casters in PvP and on bosses with dangerous casts.
