Shaman Totems in WoW Classic: Guide to Every Element

Section: Classes & races 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 03.10.2026

Shaman totems are what make a shaman welcome in any Horde group in WoW Classic 1.12.1. A totem is placed at your feet, lasts a limited time (most of them up to 2 minutes) and buffs allies or hinders enemies around it. On the WoW x5 server a shaman unlocks almost the full totem kit quickly, so it pays to know which one to drop in each situation right away.

Basic totem rules

  • Totems are split into four elements: Earth, Fire, Water and Air. Only one totem of each element can be active at a time, so four at most.
  • Each element requires a totem reagent in your bags. They are rewarded by class quests, covered in detail in the shaman totem quests guide.
  • Most totems have only 5 health and die to any attack, so keep them away from enemy area damage.
  • Totem buffs only affect members of the shaman party within range, usually 20 yards, not the whole raid.
  • Totems are stationary: if the group moves on, you have to drop them again.

Earth totems

Earthbind Totem6slows enemies within 10 yards
Stoneclaw Totem8taunts creatures into attacking the totem
Strength of Earth Totem10increases party strength
Tremor Totem18removes Fear, Charm and Sleep from the party

Strength of Earth Totem is the standard for melee groups. Tremor Totem is irreplaceable against bosses and classes that use fear. Earthbind Totem and Stoneclaw Totem are survival tools for solo play and PvP, and they combine well with the shocks from the shaman abilities list.

Searing Totem is your helper while leveling, and Magma Totem plus Fire Nova Totem are area damage tools against mob packs in dungeons. In raids the fire slot is often taken by Frost Resistance Totem on bosses that use frost magic.

Totems in raids: which group to buff

Since totems only reach their own party, the raid leader spreads shamans across groups. A typical layout from the raid group setup guide:

  • Warrior and rogue group. Windfury Totem, Strength of Earth Totem and Grace of Air Totem. Windfury is the main reason a Horde shaman joins the melee: an extra attack with bonus attack power sharply raises warrior damage. This role is usually filled by an Enhancement shaman.
  • Healer group. Mana Spring Totem, Mana Tide Totem for tough moments and Tremor Totem when needed. This is a job for a Restoration shaman.
  • Caster group. Mana Spring Totem and Tranquil Air Totem so that mages and warlocks do not pull aggro.
  • Fights with special magic. Fire, Frost or Nature Resistance Totems, plus Poison or Disease Cleansing Totem.
Совет

Air totems compete with each other: one shaman cannot keep Windfury Totem and Grace of Air Totem up at the same time. With two shamans in a party, split Air and Earth between them.

To swap totems quickly use shaman macros, and the button order in combat is covered in the shaman rotation guide.

FAQ

How many totems can a shaman have at once?

Up to four: one totem of each element, Earth, Fire, Water and Air. A new totem of the same element replaces the previous one.

Do shaman totems affect the whole raid?

No. In 1.12.1 totems only buff members of the shaman party who stand within range, usually 20 yards. That is why shamans are spread across different raid groups.

Why is a shaman placed in the warrior group?

Because of Windfury Totem: it gives the main-hand weapons of party members a 20% chance for an extra attack with bonus attack power. Together with Strength of Earth and Grace of Air it is the strongest buff set for melee fighters.

Do totems require items?

Yes. Each element needs its matching totem reagent in your bags: an Earth, Fire, Water or Air Totem. They are obtained through shaman class quests.
