Druid Forms Explained: Bear, Cat, Moonkin and More

Section: Classes & races 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 03.10.2026

Druid forms are what set this class apart in WoW Classic 1.12.1. The same character can tank, deal melee damage like a rogue, cast nukes or heal the group simply by changing shape. Druids level quickly on the WoW x5 server, so it pays to know in advance when each shapeshift form unlocks and what it is for.

All Druid Forms by Level

In Vanilla the druid has six forms, counting the upgraded bear. Two are rewarded by class quests, the rest are learned from the trainer or through talents. Step-by-step quest walkthroughs live in our separate guide to druid form quests; this page is an overview of the forms themselves.

There is no Tree of Life form in 1.12.1 — it arrived with The Burning Crusade. Classic also has no flight form.

Each Form in Detail

Bear and Dire Bear

Bear Form sharply increases armor from items, attack power and health, and the druid switches from mana to rage. At level 40 the regular bear is replaced by Dire Bear Form, which grants even more armor plus a percentage bonus to Stamina. It is the main tanking form in dungeons and an emergency button for any druid when enemies turn on them.

Cat

Cat Form switches the druid to energy and combo points, just like a rogue. Attack power scales with Agility, and Prowl lets the druid move in stealth. Cat is the core damage form of a feral druid and an excellent tool for leveling and farming.

Aquatic and Travel Form

Aquatic Form increases swim speed by 50% and allows unlimited underwater breathing. Travel Form increases run speed by 40% and only works outdoors — before you own a mount it is the main way to get around between quests.

Moonkin

Moonkin Form is the 31-point talent of the Balance tree. It greatly increases armor and grants an aura that raises spell critical chance of party members within 30 yards by 3%. A Moonkin can only cast Balance spells and cannot heal while shapeshifted.

Shapeshifting Mechanics

  • Cost. Every shift costs a percentage of base mana, so frequent swapping drains your mana pool fast.
  • Breaking control. Entering any form removes Polymorph and movement impairing effects, and the druid is immune to Polymorph while shapeshifted. This is a key PvP trick.
  • Rage and energy. The Furor talent gives a chance to gain 10 rage when entering bear or 40 energy when entering cat. This is the basis of powershifting — re-entering Cat Form for a burst of energy.
  • What you cannot do. Druid spells are unavailable in animal forms: heals, Entangling Roots, Innervate. You have to drop to caster form first.
  • What you can do. Potions and most consumables work without leaving the form, while animal abilities only work in their own form.
Совет

Bind your forms to convenient keys and set up macros that cancel the form and cast a heal. Ready-made examples are in our druid macros guide.

A feral druid can both tank and deal damage in the same raid by switching between bear and cat; a detailed point layout is in the feral druid build. A healer spends almost the whole fight in caster form and keeps bear as protection against sudden attacks. A Balance druid lives in Moonkin Form — see the Balance druid build for details.

FAQ

At what level does a druid get each form?

Bear Form unlocks at level 10 via a class quest, Aquatic Form at 16 also via a quest, Cat Form at 20, Travel Form at 30 and Dire Bear Form at 40. Moonkin Form is only available as a Balance talent.

Is Tree of Life in Vanilla?

No. Tree of Life was added in The Burning Crusade. In 1.12.1 a healing druid has no dedicated form and heals in caster form.

Does shapeshifting remove slows and Polymorph?

Yes. Entering any form frees the druid from Polymorph and movement impairing effects, and the druid is immune to Polymorph while shapeshifted.

Can I heal in Bear or Cat Form?

No. Druid spells are unavailable in animal forms, so you must return to caster form to heal. Moonkin can only cast Balance spells.
