Section: Classes & races 2 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 04.08.2026

In Vanilla the priest has a unique mechanic — racial priest spells you only get for a specific race. These, more than the generic racials, usually decide the pick.

Faction breakdown

Alliance

On Alliance the best raid priest is the Dwarf for Fear Ward: it removes and prevents fear, critical on Onyxia, in BWL and in PvP. Plus Stoneform. Humans get Feedback and Desperate Prayer, Night Elves get Elune's Grace and Starshards (plus Shadowmeld).

Horde

On Horde the Undead dominates: Will of the Forsaken (immunity to fear/sleep/charm — huge in both PvE and PvP) plus the racial Devouring Plague and Touch of Weakness. The Troll gets Hex of Weakness, Shadowguard and Berserking for casting.

Key racial abilities

Dwarf

Stoneform — removes bleed, poison and disease, +10% armor for 8 sec.
Gun Specialization — +1% crit with guns.
Find Treasure — shows treasure on the minimap.
Frost Resistance — +10 frost resistance.

Undead (Forsaken)

Will of the Forsaken — removes fear, sleep and charm, 5-sec immunity.
Cannibalize — restores HP by eating a corpse.
Underwater Breathing — longer underwater.
Shadow Resistance — +10 shadow resistance.

PvP notes

In PvP Will of the Forsaken is the single strongest racial against mages/warlocks. The Dwarf's Fear Ward also saves you from fear chains.

Verdict: which race to pick

Alliance: Dwarf — the best overall racial package for the Priest. Horde: Undead (Forsaken) — the strongest pick for the Priest.

FAQ

What is the best Priest race on Alliance?

Dwarf — thanks to racials that suit the Priest best (see the Faction breakdown).

What is the best Priest race on Horde?

Undead (Forsaken) — the strongest option by racial abilities.

How much does race matter?

On an x5 server race is a noticeable but not decisive bonus: 1–5% stats and utility. Build, gear and play matter more, but all else equal the best race adds DPS and survivability.
